Four years into life as a hikikomori, university dropout Tatsuhiro Satou is convinced his isolation is the work of a secret organization he calls the N.H.K., until Misaki Nakahara, a strange and persistent girl, shows up at his door offering to cure him. Their arrangement turns into nightly meetings in a nearby park, where Misaki's amateur psychoanalysis needles at exactly why Satou has shut himself off from the world. This original novel follows Satou's paranoid, often darkly comic descent and uneasy reckoning with his own self-imposed exile, the basis for the later manga and anime adaptations.
