Koyomi Araragi, a third-year high school student who barely survived a vampire attack over spring break, catches his classmate Hitagi Senjogahara when she falls down a staircase and discovers she weighs almost nothing. Her weightlessness traces to an encounter with a crab deity, one of many supernatural oddities tied to personal burdens. With help from Meme Oshino, a drifter who cured most of Araragi's vampirism, he starts tracking down the apparitions haunting the girls around him.
