Seventeen-year-old Suzume lives a quiet life in a small Kyushu town until she runs into a traveler asking after a door. Curiosity takes her to the one he meant, weathered and alone amid mountain ruins, and the stone she pulls from the ground beside it turns into a cat and bolts, leaving a disaster-bringing worm free to rise. With the traveler now stuck in the shape of a child's chair, Suzume follows that cat, Daijin, the length of Japan, closing doors before each can shake a town apart. This novel tells the same story as the 2022 film.
