Synopsis
At fourteen, Elaina passes her sorcery exam and later becomes the "Ashen Witch" after training under a distant mentor, then sets off on a three-year journey to see the world for herself. Each stop unfolds as its own short story: a magical mystery, an odd custom, a warning ignored. Through all of them Elaina stays an observer more than a participant, writing everything down in her travel diary. Later in her journey she crosses paths with investigators like Sheila, the "Night Witch," who patrols for magical wrongdoing. This is the original light novel behind the manga and anime adaptations.
