Akihito Kanbara, a half-youmu who cannot die, stops Mirai Kuriyama from jumping off the school roof and is stabbed for his trouble by a blade she forms from her own blood. Mirai is a Spirit World warrior with the rare and feared power to manipulate blood, which has left her shunned even among other warriors. With Mirai too hesitant to slay youmu on her own, Akihito pushes her to take on hunts, and the two settle into an uneasy partnership at the Literary Club alongside fellow warriors Mitsuki and Hiroomi Nase.
