A bombing tears through Nichiuri TV during a broadcast of the Satsuki Cup, a competitive karuta tournament built around the classical poetry anthology Hyakunin Isshu, and Conan Edogawa pulls Heiji Hattori and Kazuha Toyama from the wreckage. At the tournament itself, Heiji is confronted by Momiji Ooka, a rival karuta champion who claims to be his fiancée. Then the reigning Satsuki Cup champion turns up murdered, poetry cards scattered around the body, and Conan and Heiji work with the Osaka and Kyoto police to find out how the bombing, the killing, and Momiji's claim connect.
