Utena Tenjou enrolls at Ohtori Academy still chasing the memory of a prince who comforted her as a child, only to be pulled into the student council's strange rituals around fellow student Anthy Himemiya. Winning a duel against council member Kyouichi Saionji leaves Utena engaged to Anthy as the "Rose Bride," and further duels with council members Touga Kiryuu, Juri Arisugawa, and Miki Kaoru follow as each tests what claiming Anthy is really worth. The manga ran alongside the 1997 TV anime but develops its own version of the story.
