Utena Tenjou discovers a bond to childhood acquaintance Touga Kiryuu and is drawn into duels for the hand of Anthy Himemiya, the "Rose Bride," inside the walled world of Ohtori Academy. This film retells that story as a stand-alone alternate continuity: characters familiar from the TV series appear with altered designs and relationships, and the themes of adolescence and control are pushed further than the series took them. It reworks the original rather than continuing it.
