In 2036 Tokyo, nanomachine medicine has all but eliminated death for the elite living inside a walled district called the Inside, while everyone left outside works nineteen-hour shifts to sustain it. Painter Youzou Ooba joins a friend's biker gang on a raid into the Inside meant as a suicide run, but when the attempt turns him into a monstrous Lost, he discovers he can revert to human form, a power that draws investigator Yoshiko Hiiragi to him as an outbreak of Lost spreads across the city. This film reimagines Osamu Dazai's novel Ningen Shikkaku (No Longer Human) as science fiction.
