Synopsis
Yaichi Kuzuryu is a teenage professional shogi player who already holds the Ryuo, the game's highest title, when nine-year-old Ai Hinatsuru turns up at his door claiming he promised to take her on as a disciple. Yaichi cannot recall ever saying that and lets her stay anyway, and the light novel follows their mismatched mentorship through Japan's professional shogi circuit, where a child prodigy and a slumping champion turn out to need each other. It is the source for both a manga and an anime adaptation.
