Centuries into a slow collapse of the human population, a UN-appointed mediator known only as 'I' returns to her rural hometown to help her tinkering grandfather and finds herself dealing with the planet's new dominant species: fairies, ten-centimeter creatures obsessed with sweets who wield advanced, barely-controlled technology. Her first attempt at diplomatic contact goes sideways fast, and the fallout makes plain how far the remaining humans have fallen behind their candy-loving successors.
