Souhei Saikawa, an assistant professor of architecture, is taken by a colleague to watch a demonstration inside his own university's sealed low-temperature laboratory. Before the day is out, two graduate students are found dead in separate rooms behind doors nobody could have used. Saikawa and his student Moe Nishinosono are left working out how a killer got in and out of a chamber locked against the cold.
