Shōtarō Kaneda leads a biker gang through the streets of Neo-Tokyo, a city rebuilt after a mysterious explosion destroyed the original Tokyo in 1988. When his friend Tetsuo Shima collides with an escaped psychic child and begins developing uncontrollable telekinetic powers, the military scrambles to contain him before he becomes as dangerous as Akira — the esper whose power leveled Tokyo decades earlier. Kaneda gets drawn into the conflict alongside resistance fighters and government scientists as Tetsuo's abilities spiral beyond anyone's control.
