Set in 2046, this novel follows Mikako Nagamine and Noboru Terao, middle school classmates carrying an unspoken first love, after Mikako is recruited into the UN Space Force and boards the warship Lysithea to hunt the alien Tarsians. As she pushes farther into the outer solar system, the delay on every message back to Noboru stretches longer, and he is left on Earth unable to move past her as the years pass. The book tells the story twice, once in Mikako's voice and once in Noboru's. It is a second, separate novelization of the same film.
