Ash and his friends are traveling near the Azoth Kingdom when the Mythical Pokémon Volcanion falls from the sky and ends up magically bound to Ash by a force neither of them can undo. The kingdom's councillor, Alva, has stolen the Soul-Heart that powers Magearna, an artificial Pokémon built five hundred years earlier, and plans to use it to seize control of a flying fortress. Ash, Volcanion, and Ash's companions Serena, Clemont, and Bonnie set out to get Magearna back before Alva can act.
