After his grandfather and shamisen teacher Matsugorou dies telling him to stop playing until he finds a sound of his own, Setsu Sawamura drops out of high school and runs off to Tokyo. There he crosses paths with Yuna Tachiki, an aspiring actress chasing her own break, before his estranged mother, the singer Umeko, tracks him down and forces him back into school. Setsu spends the manga hunting for a shamisen style that's actually his, not his grandfather's.
