Kraft Lawrence, a traveling merchant, discovers the wolf harvest deity Holo hiding in his wagon after she abandons the wheat fields of Pasloe, where villagers no longer need her. Holo — centuries old but taking the form of a young woman with wolf ears and tail — strikes a deal: she will travel with Lawrence if he escorts her north to her homeland of Yoitsu. Their first venture together pulls them into a silver-coin speculation scheme that puts Lawrence's entire livelihood on the line.
