Touma Kamijou, a high school student in Academy City — a technologically advanced district where students train as psychic espers — ranks at the lowest level despite possessing Imagine Breaker, a power in his right hand that negates any supernatural ability on contact. One evening he finds a nun named Index Librorum Prohibitorum hanging on his balcony railing, claiming to have memorized 103,000 forbidden grimoires. Magicians pursuing Index draw Touma into a conflict between Academy City's science side and the religious magic factions outside its walls.
