Pilot Hikaru Ichijou pulls idol singer Minmay Lynn from a collapsing section of the SDF-1 Macross, and the days they spend trapped together pull them close. After their rescue, a joyride across Saturn's rings ends with Hikaru, Minmay, Lieutenant Misa Hayase, Minmay's cousin Kaifun, and pilot Roy Focker captured by the Zentradi. Stranded with Misa on an Earth devastated by earlier Zentradi attacks, Hikaru uncovers ruins tied to the ancient Protoculture, and a song discovered among them may be the only thing that can end the war. This film retells the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross TV series.
