Deep within the inner palace lives the Raven Consort, a woman exempt from the duties the other consorts owe the emperor, who uses her mystical arts to grant requests ranging from exorcisms to finding lost things. When the newly enthroned Emperor Koushun seeks her out, he meets Ryuu Jusetsu, the current Raven Consort, whose reputation as ageless and unknowable turns out to hide a much more human story. Framed as a mystery-of-the-week at the outset, the light novel follows Koushun's growing involvement in Jusetsu's guarded life inside the palace.
