In a towering future city where robots do the work humans no longer want, the power-hungry Duke Red and his Red Party force Dr. Lawton to grow an artificial human with superhuman abilities. The scientist flees with his creation instead and raises the child, Michi, in hiding. When Michi finally ventures out and befriends a boy named Kenichi, the Red Party closes in, and the Japanese detective Shunsaku Ban is pulled into a conspiracy running from the city's robot underclass to a plan for world domination. This 1949 manga predates and differs substantially from the better-known 2001 anime film of the same name.
