Aoyama, a methodical fourth-grader who keeps notebooks on everything he studies, starts investigating after penguins begin appearing without explanation in his landlocked town. He suspects the woman he nicknames Onee-san, a dental assistant at the clinic he visits, knows more than she admits. This original novel follows Aoyama's summer of hypotheses, obstacles, and slowly encroaching mystery, told in the boy's own matter-of-fact voice.
