Synopsis
Elin's mother is a Touda steward, responsible for the kingdom's armored war serpents, and when several of them die mysteriously she is executed for it, leaving Elin alone in the wilderness before her tenth birthday. A beekeeper takes the girl in, and she grows up discovering she can hear and calm the creatures other people fear, from the Touda to the flying Royal Beasts that answer to the queen. This is the original novel behind the story, following Elin from that early loss into a kingdom drifting toward war between the queen's domain and that of the grand duke who commands its armies.
