Guts, a lone mercenary with nothing to fight for but survival, loses a duel to Griffith, who commands the mercenary company known as the Band of the Falcon, and is pressed into its ranks. As the Falcons wage campaign after campaign for the Kingdom of Midland, Guts rises to lead the raiders while Griffith's ambition to rule a kingdom of his own pulls the entire company forward. Casca, the Falcons' fierce second-in-command, distrusts the newcomer even as the three grow inseparable.
