In an alternate 19th-century Europe, Victor Frankenstein's discovery lets the dead be reanimated as soulless laborers called 'corpses.' Medical student John Watson secretly brings back his own dead friend, Friday, is caught doing it, and is pressed into the British secret service rather than prison. With Friday at his side, Watson is sent after Frankenstein's lost original notes, the one record said to explain how a reanimated body might be given a soul, on a trail that runs from London to Afghanistan and on to Japan.
