Hybrid Children are artificial companions that develop real emotions and abilities in response to the affection they receive, and Kotarou Izumi has spent ten years alongside his own, Hazuki. When Hazuki suddenly collapses, Kotarou is forced to confront what their bond has actually meant to him. Two further short stories widen the premise to other owner-and-Hybrid-Child pairs, each tracing how these constructed beings and the people who care for them grow attached, and what it costs when that attachment breaks.
