Rei Kiriyama, a seventeen-year-old professional shogi player, lives alone in Tokyo after losing his family and drifting through the competitive circuit in near-isolation. A chance encounter brings him into the orbit of the Kawamoto sisters — Akari, Hinata, and Momo — whose cramped home above their grandfather's wagashi shop becomes his refuge. Between tournament matches and dinners at the Kawamoto table, Rei begins to confront the grief and guilt he has carried since childhood.
