Re-L Mayer, an investigator in the sealed city of Romdeau, is assigned to a string of murders committed by AutoReiv androids infected with the Cogito virus. Her case leads her to a humanoid entity called a Proxy and to Vincent Law, an amnesiac immigrant hiding more than he understands. Together with Pino, a child-model AutoReiv who has gained self-awareness, they leave Romdeau and cross the wastelands searching for answers about the Proxies and the ruined world outside the dome.
