A totalitarian government drafts Shuya Nanahara's ninth-grade class onto a sealed-off island, arms them, and fits them with explosive collars under a program with one rule: kill or be killed until a single student remains. Shuya refuses to play along and instead tries to protect the people around him, starting with Noriko Nakagawa, even as the government broadcasts the results as spectacle. This 1999 novel set the template later carried into the manga and film adaptations, staying grounded in the students' first hours of confusion and dread.
