Nanoka Koyanagi gets a school assignment to define what happiness means and decides real answers will not come from a textbook. She tracks down three strangers who each see life differently, a solitary young woman living alone, a withdrawn teenage girl who self-harms, and an elderly woman, and starts piecing together her own answer from their conflicting outlooks. Along the way it becomes clear that something larger is drawing her toward these three in particular. This novel is the source material for a separate manga adaptation.
