Phoenix

火の鳥

Young Nagi survives Queen Himiko's army only because the warrior Sarutahiko takes him in, and his elder sister Hinaku is among the handful of other villagers spared. Sarutahiko sends him to capture the immortal Phoenix nesting in a nearby volcano, since Himiko believes its blood will keep her young forever. This opening arc, "Dawn," sets the pattern for the series, as four more self-contained stories carry that promise of eternal life into later eras, each following different people whose pursuit of it costs more than they expect. The series adapts five non-consecutive arcs of Osamu Tezuka's manga.
