Under Japan's National Prosperity Maintenance Act, one in every thousand children is secretly given a nanocapsule during a school-entry vaccination, set to kill them at a fixed moment between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four. Twenty-four hours before that moment, a civil servant delivers the 'ikigami', the notice that the recipient's life ends tomorrow. In this sequel, delivery agent Kunihisa Yasuoka, a reformed thought criminal, works the same beat until a mix-up puts an ikigami for his own estranged son in his hands.
