Oniyasha grows up dancing in his father Kan'ami's traveling theater troupe in fourteenth-century Japan, but he can't shake a nagging question: why does any of it matter? Every step, every gesture in a performance feels arbitrary to him, and he has no answer for why one show draws praise while another falls flat. A chance encounter sets him on a path that will reshape how he sees performance itself, in the formative years of Zeami Motokiyo, who would go on to give Noh theater the form it still has.
