University freshman Kakeru Sorano keeps to himself until an April night in Tokyo, when he meets Koharu Fuyutsuki, a classmate who laughs easily, makes friends without trying, and is blind. What holds his attention isn't pity; it's that Koharu, who has more reason than he does to hold back, refuses to. She wants to launch her own fireworks display one day, and as Kakeru gets pulled into that ambition, he starts questioning why he stopped reaching for anything at all.
