Kenji Koiso, a shy math prodigy and part-time moderator in the billion-user virtual world OZ, accepts an invitation from upperclassman Natsuki Shinohara to pose as her boyfriend at her great-grandmother Sakae Jinnouchi's 90th birthday. That night, Kenji solves a cryptographic puzzle sent to his phone — unknowingly handing control of his OZ avatar to Love Machine, a rogue AI that begins hijacking accounts and crippling the real-world infrastructure OZ controls.
