Hideki Motosuwa, a young man from the countryside attending cram school in Tokyo, finds an abandoned persocom lying in the trash, one of the human-shaped personal computers everyone in the city seems to own. He powers her on and discovers she can say nothing but "Chi." He names her Chi and begins teaching her language and daily life while trying to figure out whether she is a Chobit, a rumored persocom line said to possess genuine emotions. Chi's unusual abilities draw the interest of persocom researchers and owners across the city.
