Hideki Motosuwa, a young man from the countryside attending cram school in Tokyo, finds an abandoned persocom—a human-shaped personal computer—lying in the trash and powers her on, only to discover she can say nothing but "Chi." He names her Chi and begins teaching her language and daily life while trying to figure out whether she is a Chobit, a rumored persocom line said to possess genuine emotions. Chi's unusual abilities draw the interest of persocom researchers and owners across the city.
