Phosphophyllite, the youngest and most fragile of the Lustrous—immortal gem-beings who defend their island from the Lunarians, a celestial race that raids them for decorations—is too brittle for combat at a hardness of only 3.5. Kongo-sensei assigns Phos the task of compiling a natural history encyclopedia, a job no one wants and Phos considers beneath them. Searching for material pulls Phos toward the shore, where encounters with the solitary Cinnabar—exiled for producing a toxic mercury vapor—begin to reshape how both gems see their roles.
