Phosphophyllite, the youngest and most fragile of the Lustrous, is too brittle for combat at a hardness of only 3.5. The Lustrous are immortal gem-beings who defend their island from the Lunarians, a celestial race that raids them for decorations. Kongo-sensei assigns Phos the task of compiling a natural history encyclopedia, a job no one wants and Phos considers beneath them. Searching for material pulls Phos toward the shore, where encounters with the solitary Cinnabar, exiled for producing a toxic mercury vapor, begin to reshape how both gems see their roles.
