Kumiko Oumae enrolls at Kitauji High School in Uji hoping to leave her euphonium days behind after a bitter loss at her middle school regional competition. When she joins the concert band anyway and meets trumpeter Reina Kousaka — the same girl whose tears after that defeat still haunt her — both push toward the national competition under a demanding new adviser who refuses to let the club coast.
