Seventeen-year-old Suzume Iwato, living with her aunt Tamaki in rural Kyushu, follows a young stranger named Souta Munakata to an abandoned ruin where she finds a freestanding door. Opening it releases a colossal supernatural worm called a Mimizu that triggers earthquakes, and Souta is cursed into the form of a three-legged children's chair. Together they travel across Japan, closing doors at forgotten ruins before the Mimizu can devastate each region.
