Sapphire, born through an angel's mistake with a boy's heart in a girl's body, is raised as her kingdom's prince because only a boy may inherit the throne. When Duke Duralumin's faction discovers that she is really a girl, the duke plots to expose the secret and depose the king who hid it. Tezuka Productions distilled Princess Knight into this eight-minute short for the KYOTO Tezuka Osamu World mini-theater inside Kyoto Station, where it premiered on December 4, 1999. The Phoenix appears as the on-screen storyteller, linking it to its double-bill partner, the Kyoto-history short Benkei to Ushiwakamaru.
