Tsukiko Sagi, the shy designer behind the wildly popular mascot Maromi, is attacked on her way home by an assailant on inline skates wielding a bent golden baseball bat — a figure the media dubs Lil' Slugger. Detectives Keiichi Ikari and Mitsuhiro Maniwa take the case, but as more victims surface, each one under intense personal pressure at the time of their attack, the investigation spirals into something stranger than a serial assault.
