Thalia, an ill-fated princess born of an affair, grows up among indifferent parents, hostile half-siblings and servants who despise her, and she protects herself by turning her thorns on anyone who comes near. Only one person leaves her defenseless: the Prince of the East, heir to the Grand Duke, raised under discipline bordering on abuse until he lived solely for his family's honor and duty. To keep a promise made to the late Empress, he marries Thalia's half-sister, Ayla, and Thalia begins to fall apart.
