Joe Yabuki, a rootless young drifter, wanders into Tokyo's Sanya slums and runs into Danpei Tange, a broken-down alcoholic who was once a boxing trainer. Spotting raw talent in Joe's street brawling, Danpei resolves to make him a fighter, but Joe's troublemaking lands him in a juvenile detention center, where he meets the disciplined former boxing prodigy Toru Rikiishi. Their clash behind bars sparks a rivalry that drives Joe to chase the sport in earnest. This 1970s TV anime adapts the classic boxing manga.
