Eleven-year-old Tsubasa Ozora moves with his mother to the town of Nankatsu, soccer ball never far from his feet. There he runs into Genzo Wakabayashi, the gifted goalkeeper of the reigning champion Shutetsu team, who becomes his first great rival. Mentored by former Brazilian star Roberto Hongo and paired with the playmaker Taro Misaki, Tsubasa takes Nankatsu's elementary team into youth tournaments against rivals like the fierce striker Kojiro Hyuga.
