Joe Yabuki is a rootless, scrappy orphan drifting through Tokyo's San'ya slums, picking fights and running cons until his temper lands him in juvenile detention. There he catches the eye of Danpei Tange, a broken-down former boxer who sees raw promise in the boy's wild swings and resolves to mold him into a fighter. Joe's path from street brawler to the ring runs through hard losses and the rivals who push him forward.
