Sensei, a depressed novelist of postwar Japan, prepares to die alongside his lover Sacchan in a double-suicide pact at a swollen river — only to be hit by a truck before they can jump. He wakes in a fantasy world summoned by the elf priestess Annette to defeat a demon king, names a stranded catgirl Tama, and sets out across the realm with one stubborn goal: find Sacchan, finish what they started. The Sensei character is a direct riff on Osamu Dazai, whose No Longer Human gives the title its grammar.
