Synopsis
Makoto 'Smile' Tsukimoto and Yutaka 'Peco' Hoshino have been inseparable friends since childhood, bonded by table tennis at their local dojo. When they enter Katase High's ping-pong club, each confronts a different wall: Peco's raw talent meets humbling defeat against Chinese transfer student Kong Wenge, while Smile's inhuman reflexes are locked behind an emotional flatness his coach Jō 'Butterfly Joe' Koizumi is determined to crack open. Across one tournament season the series traces five players — Smile, Peco, Kong, the obsessive Ryūichi 'Dragon' Kazama, and the journeyman Manabu 'Demon' Sakuma — asking what separates those who play to win from those who play to be saved.
