In a remote mountain village, a series of overnight livestock deaths draws the occult detective Kohachi Inugami out from Tokyo. He finds that the ostracized farmhand everyone calls Dorotabou is actually Kabane Kusaka, a half-ghoul boy abandoned by his parents. Inugami takes Kabane back to Tokyo to work at his supernatural detective agency alongside Shiki, a half-arachne, and Akira, a yuki-onna, and Kabane starts searching for his missing parents while learning what having friends means.
