Jiro Horikoshi dreams of designing beautiful aircraft but poor eyesight bars him from the cockpit. Guided by recurring visions of Italian designer Giovanni Battista Caproni, he joins Mitsubishi and throws himself into engineering fighter planes through 1920s and 1930s Japan. When he reunites with Nahoko Satomi, a young woman he first met during the Great Kanto Earthquake, her worsening tuberculosis shadows a brief, intense romance even as his prototype nears its first flight.
