Mato Kuroi, an energetic junior-high student, befriends the quiet and isolated Yomi Takanashi on their first day of school. As their friendship deepens and then fractures under jealousy and miscommunication, a parallel war unfolds in a barren otherworld where their combat avatars, Black Rock Shooter and Dead Master, fight battles that mirror the girls' conflicts.
