Mato Kuroi, an energetic junior-high student, befriends the quiet and isolated Yomi Takanashi on their first day of school. As their friendship deepens and then fractures under jealousy and miscommunication, a parallel war unfolds in a barren otherworld where their combat avatars — Black Rock Shooter and Dead Master — fight battles that mirror the girls' emotional conflicts. Each crack in their real-world bond triggers escalation in the otherworld, blurring the line between metaphor and something far more literal.
